FACE Program at Pine Ridge Schools

Pine Ridge Schools supports the parents/guardians and children of our Oglala Lakota Nation through the Family and Child Education Program. FACE prepares parents/guardians and children to enter our educational program and succeed throughout the learning process. As their children’s first teachers, parents/guardians play a vital role in ensuring children have the necessary skills to begin classroom learning. The FACE program provides skills development and education that shows children how to be students.

Preschool education begins long before a student is enrolled in school. Parents/guardians will learn the techniques, tools and habits that prepare their child(ren) for the first day of school. Families will begin the learning process at home, and many of the FACE program’s preschool lessons will be taught in the house as early as infancy. Children develop various skills (e.g., social, emotional, listening, cognitive, motor skills, etc.) that allow them to progress and develop appropriately. From prenatal care to grade three, FACE continues to support families.

In addition to life skills, FACE fosters improved educational standards. Family, school and community relationships are developed through the FACE program. Household literacy typically improves as families incorporate family reading habits from an early stage. Our relationships also identify a child's special needs, which helps guide families to the appropriate special education services. Our FACE program also teaches and celebrates the Oglala Lakota culture to our families.

The FACE program’s educational services integrate language and culture in home and school settings. All parents/guardians of preschool and early elementary-age students are encouraged to enroll in Pine Ridge Schools’ FACE program.
