Student Activities at Pine Ridge School

Pine Ridge School Thorpes student activities are rooted in the Oglala Lakota values. Our students live and learn the principles of culture and tradition through their participation in diverse activities. These activities add to the physical, social, cultural and spiritual components of their education.

Academic Achievement

Pine Ridge School’s Thorpes engage in various academic activities that prepare them for their next grade levels and beyond. In addition to solid foundations in English language arts, math and science, many students participate in student council and college prep programs. Students with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher may be invited to join the National Honor Society.

Native Education Activities

The Pine Ridge School curriculum integrates Lakota cultural values, traditions and language with the assistance of its Lakota staff, educators and community members. We provide opportunities for students to experience their Lakota language and culture through workshops, events and performances such as powwows.

Music and Art Activities

We introduce our students to music and the arts at an early age. Students are eventually permitted to join the school band and develop their talent for a favorite instrument. We currently have young musicians who have chosen to join the Flute Society. Thorpes’ talents are discovered as they join the art club.

Athletics/PE Programs

Our athletic competitions and activities support Thorpes’ overall well-being. Students participate in sports such as football, volleyball, cross country, wrestling, track and more. Summer programs and workshops offer various extracurricular athletic activities, like archery and rodeo clubs.

Science Activities

Students may take school field trips to develop their love for science and technology. Science fairs, STEM education events, and computer science workshops may be held on or off campus. Students need to maintain passing grades in all classes to participate in many extracurricular activities.
